| On the final day, Rowe’s crew gathers the passengers on the docks for their departure. All the passengers stand in the hot sun as Nameless tote away crates and large barrels of supplies. Soon the Nameless usher each passenger back onto the newly repaired Black Tide, where everything appears to be good as new. There is no evidence of the chipmunk massacre. No blood stains, no broken furniture, not even a patch of dust atop the bookcase. The Black Tide appears fit for service in every way!
However, though each passenger is accounted for, the same cannot be said for the locals. The stately houses of the Sun Island natives are quiet. The streets are silent. Curtains move as the inhabitants peep out their windows, then vanish indoors once again. The departure of the Black Tide is not quite as festive as the arrival. The land is eerily still, save for the gentle waves lapping at the shore.
When the Black Tide shoves off, everything appears to be well. Once the island is a dot on the horizon, however, smudges of black stain the sky. Is the island… burning?!
Oh, well, too late to go back now. Onwards! |
